Feature destination: Spot the butterflies

Secluded Butterfly Bay and Cataran Bay are among the best places in the Whitsundays for spotting hundreds of butterflies, including the majestic blue Ulysses - with a wingspan of up to nine centimetres, it is among the biggest in Australia! The butterflies fly out over the ocean every morning and back in the afternoon and can be seen from latitude 20°04'24 S and longitude 148°55'55 E. Moor on the eastern side of Butterfly Bay, off Hook Island and follow the creek to find hundreds fluttering in the trees. Another great spot is Cataran Bay, off Border Island, only accessible at high tide. Walk up to the peak – 48 metres above sea level – pausing to take in the breathtaking views of Whitehaven Beach, before viewing the butterflies in the trees lining the beach. Superb snorkelling is guaranteed at Pit Stop, a short walk to the opposite side of Cataran Bay. Snorkelling gear can be hired from WRAY for a cost of $5.

Snorkel in paradise

Experience some of the Whitsundays' best snorkelling at picturesque Saba Bay, off Hook Island. While many of the beaches in the Whitsundays are made of coral, Saba Bay has an expansive white sandy beach, courtesy of the current from Whitehaven Beach. A coral reef near the beach where the island extends to a point, is magnificent. Access the area by dinghy at latitude 20°06'25 S and longitude 148°57'20 E.

Meet WRAY briefer: Mike Dicker

Briefer Mike Dicker ensures charterers have the confidence and knowledge to skipper themselves around the Whitsundays. Mike - who holds an open Master Class 5 and is a qualified inshore skipper - and wife Nancy sailed into Shute Harbour on their catamaran Stormbird in 2007, fell in love with the area and stayed. At WRAY, all charterers undergo a three-hour briefing covering the area, their vessel, and sailing instruction.

The story of Angelique

The French origins of one of WRAY’s elite catamarans and a boat owner’s romantic streak were the inspiration behind the name of Beneteau Lagoon 400, Angelique. Owner Chris Liszka won over wife Ania to the idea of the vessel's purchase with red roses - and by calling her 'an angel'. Angelique accommodates 10 people in four spacious cabins – each with their own ensuite. BBQ Coral Trout

Chef Andrew Mirosch of Queensland’s award-winning Sirromet Winery created a series of delectable dishes - like beautifully barbecued Coral Trout - for WRAY. All are presented on postcards and available to our charterers now. All you have to do is cast off, follow his instructions, then settle back and enjoy your meal as the sun sets over the turquoise waters of the Whitsundays. Bon appetit!
